English vocabulary upper-intermediate

This list contains vocabulary that appears in intermediate reading practice and may be new to students at this level of proficiency. The vocabulary is listed alphabetically for the eight lessons in the book.

Many of the words come from the Academic Word List (AWL), the University Word List, or the General Service List (GSL). Different forms of a word (for example: injure, injured, injury) are included when they are useful for communication or frequently used.

Because learners have different vocabulary knowledge and different native languages, the number of new words each student encounters may vary. Research also shows that knowing one form of a word does not necessarily mean that learners know all or most of its related forms. For example, even though injure and injury look similar, learners still need practice with each form.
